Bird of Paradise is a unique, colorful and beautiful flower. It is one of those flowers that you either love or just don't like. I love the brightness of it and how it is so different to every other flower.

Friday Flower Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums are also known as mums in America which always makes me giggle because that is what we refer to as our mothers in New Zealand instead of mom. They are certainly a beautiful flower though and come in a wide variety of colors. Red, yellow, pink, orange and white.

These simple looking flowers are always a favorite as they are so bright and colorful. The colors vary between the different species. The leaves are also simple and pine needle like in shape. It is hard to see the leaves with this flower I photographed as it is in among other plants.

Friday Flower Gazania

Posted by Ruth on 2 August 2013 | 0 Comments

This week's flower is one I just love, I think because it comes in so many wonderful colors. I chose yellow and orange to make my gazania. Gazania are quite similar to arctotis but are easily recognized by their green leaves whereas arctotis have silvery grey leaves. I captured some shots of gazanias with my camera.

Friday Flower Lupin

This week's flower is a lupin - it's real name Lupinus. A few years back I managed to capture some beautiful lupins in bloom while traveling through the Arthur's Pass (mountain pass from west to east in the South Island of New Zealand). Although some may think the mountains are overrun with these flowers, I thought they made a beautiful scene.

Friday Flower Cyclamen

I always thought Cyclamen plants made wonderful mother's day gifts. I even received one once. I have to admit, they do need some extra special love and attention and I'm not so good at giving that to real plants so textile ones it is for me. Of course, being a mother, I felt it fitting to include a cyclamen in my collection, even if it is well past mother's day this year.

This weeks flower is the Malva. This flower is dedicated to Carol, founder of Quilt University where I have taught for the past 12 year. Carol was a keen gardener and grew Malva in her garden. Thanks to Roger for allowing me to use one of her garden photos.

Friday Flower Dahlia

We are almost halfway through the flower blocks and this week's flower is the dahlia. Dahlias come in many colors and shapes. I snapped these photos of dahlias a few years back when living in Nelson, New Zealand. Actually, as I think about it, it is now 10 years since I lived in Nelson so I guess it is more than a few.
