My May Stitch Along for Week 4
I totally love the stitching part of any quilt especially free motion and thread painting so I knew this would be a fun exercise for the weekend. The first thing I needed to do was stitch down that border. I used a very dark blue which matched the fabric and carefully stitched around the edges, but not before doing a warm up. I always do this before starting free motion.
Capture Your Memory in Fabric
Who are the people you remember? A favorite teacher? A loved one? A sister, a brother, a spouse, a child? What are the places that stick in your memory and bring those people, those memories back to you? I love to recreate those memories in fabric and thread, fiber and paint, as a way of making those memories, those people and places, stay fresh and new and accessible to me and my family.
What are Abstract Quilts?
Have you ever wondered about abstract quilts? Exactly what are they? I know Elizabeth has the answer to this in her class "Abstract Art for Quiltmakers". This excerpt is taken from her class to get you started, but her class will take you beyond knowing what abstract quilts are.... you'll be making them too! You know you will want to know more...
May Stitch Along Instructions for Week 4
I know you already know what is coming for this week's instructions.... yes you guessed it. It's all about stitching. You'll need to make sure all those raw edges are secure and you will want to blend the colors of your fabric with stitching just like a painter would with paints.
My May Stitch Along for Week 3
This week is all about the border and I decided to make mine a little more interesting than a pieced border. The idea came to me one morning when I was capturing an early morning photo last week from my porch as the sun was coming up. That particular photo didn't work for the purpose of this task, but I remembered I had another I'd taken, that was similar, back in October last year. So this was the photo I used.
May Stitch Along Instructions for Week 3
So where are you up to? Did you make a sunset or sunrise? I think the trick is making those tiny squares work in the way they should, but if they don't, it doesn't matter! I think I've made Aurora lights instead.... but to continue on, this week we are moving away from squares unless you choose not to of course...
A Relaxed light-hearted carefree approach
I love the look of Baltimore Album quilts. I love the joyous use of color, the formality of the designs, the realistic depiction of nature, and the hand appliqué technique itself. I also love the red-and-green quilts that were made up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the US throughout the 1800’s, because of their limitation in color, their informality of designs, and that they were appliquéd. The more we learn about these quilts, the more we find out they were made using needleturn techniques and that is my specialty.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
It's autumn here in the Southern Hemisphere, fast moving into winter but not without me capturing a couple of photos of Liquid Amber Maple leaves turning into a beautiful sight.
A Favorite Eight-pointed Star
The Entwined Star block is a variation on an eight-pointed star made from a basic nine-patch block. I designed it for a sampler quilt when I was doing a Block of the Month through the quilt shop I was working for. I had decided to do a variation of each of the blocks that we made because I wanted a larger quilt.
My May Stitch Along for Week 2
I've been having fun with this challenge! First up, I did a google search and came up with some really beautiful sunsets or sunrises. I picked one of the paintings from here: Google Search to provide me with inspired. There are many many beautiful images that it took me quite some time to chose. I even ended up watching a painting video which helped inspire my process.
