Machine Quilting Day 8

For my machine quilting days so far, I've been working with mainly fill-in quilting stitches. For the next two weeks, I want to use a more open design which could be developed into an overall quilting design or border design.

This week's photo is looking down on an open iris - I believe this might be a Japanese iris. This creates an interesting design that can easily be translated into a quilting design.

open iris

This is how I used the iris photo above to create my quilting design.

You can see how this can easily form a border design.

I start by stitching the outer section first - at the dot in the image below....

start at the dot

...then continue with the inner (shown in red).

stitch the inner section last

You can make them larger to develop an overall quilt design or small for a more compact design as shown below.

small version - the small iris is about 1 1/2" across

You might even try stitching the inner section in a different color.

I carried the yellow through to the next flower (off the photo) but think this would look better if you just stopped and started the yellow section for each flower. I had a lot of fun with this and cannot wait to design a quilt where I can use it.
