Getting Ready for Christmas anyone?

So this weekend I was thinking about making a start on Christmas projects - you know how fast Christmas approaches at this time of year, it always seems to sneak up on me, but this year I was reminded due to my "Decorate Your Christmas Tree" online workshop starting soon which is a class for a variety of different tree skirts. Anyway, I was thinking about this and thought it might be fun to include my gingerbread house block that I designed a couple of years ago.gingerbread house block ideal for totes, cushions, quilts & sweaters.

The original pattern is a 6" block so I could do one of two things seeing as a 12" block is used in the tree skirt.

  1. use 4 blocks to make up a 12" block
  2. enlarge the block 200% to make it double in size (12")

I'm thinking the 4 blocks might be a bit much so went with the second option and mocked up an image to see how it looks using one of the existing tree skirt images from my class. This worked just to give me an idea, but I would definitely need to change out that center fabric.christmas tree skirt with gingerbread houses

I like it, it makes for a nice tree skirt, but I think it might need something more in the triangle sections so I designed a tree that would work and added it.christmas tree skirt with gingerbread houses and christmas trees

I like that better. I could take it another step and add a little snow on the tree too, but for now, I'm going to leave it like this. I wonder if I have the right fabrics in my stash to make it up!

I did come up with a good idea and that was, that I should include this gingerbread house in my class as another option. I already have the instructions included in the class for how to piece in the 12" block so this will be a nice addition and a bonus for the class. In fact, I'm also going to include another bonus.... how to take any block and enlarge it to fit using one of my favorite tools.... and I'll definitely add the tree design too.

So if you join the class this season, here are the bonuses you'll get:

  • the gingerbread house templates in two sizes - 6" and 12" blocks
  • the tree templates in two sizes to fit the 12" block tree skirt
  • a video on how to enlarge any design to a 12" block (or any size actually as the same applies to whatever size you want to make)

I've also updated the gingerbread house pattern file to include the 12" size so if you are only interested in that, you can find it here: Gingerbread House pattern

I'm looking forward to making this new tree skirt. I think I'll head to my stash right now and see if I have suitable fabrics. I hope you will join me in class!

About Decorate Your Christmas Tree (online workshop): Decorate your Christmas tree with a tree skirt using applique or patchwork. You can make any size base to suit your tree and then decorate it with as much or as little as you want. We have three Christmas applique designs - poinsettia, holly and snowflakes. If applique is not your thing, then you can insert your own pieced blocks instead. Ruth will show you how. Also included in this class are easy methods of quilting using either straight stitch quilting or free-motion techniques. You will love our videos that will support the easy-to-follow instructions and photos. Read more...
