When I saw Lily Kerns class I wondered what digital fabrics was all about. I took a closer look and discovered that Lily generates and manipulates images digitally ready to print on to fabric, and then of course, prints them. Very clever I thought. All you need is your computer and being a little familiar with how to use a picture editing program, a digital camera and plenty of fabric sheets. Oh and I should say, make sure you have plenty of ink in your printer. Once you start playing, you'll want to start printing and using your fabrics.

Lily, what started your out in digital fabric printing?

"I’ve been hooked on digital graphics since I first played with the primitive program in my first DOS computer! I’m also a longtime painter and then became a photographer as well. I used fabric textured photo paper in my darkroom and putting my images on real fabric just seemed to be an obvious next step."

Does the student need any special software?

"Most of my images are edited in Photoshop or Corel Painter, but I also experiment with a variety of other creative image editing programs. If you do not have one of the Adobe or Corel programs here are two free programs that you might want to explore:

Also, software from your digital camera, scanner or printer may include image editing capabilities that you can use."

How have you used the fabrics you print?

"I used digital images for one of my Journal Quilt series and one of them, made in the program Kaleider, is included in the book that completed the journal quilt project: Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project. This book is available at Amazon.com and other vendors."

Sound like a lot of fun can be had making your own fabrics. If you ever thought about designing your own fabrics, this would be great place to start. Lily's class starts this Friday, why not join her? More Information about Digital Fabric Printing
