Down on the Farm - Ducks
I spent Christmas down on the farm at my daughter's place in North Canterbury. It's such a different lifestyle than the big city! It reminded me of my Country quilt I made a number of years ago "A Day in the Country" which is not only a BOM series but also an online workshop.
As I was out for a walk on the farm, I snapped a photo of Amanda's ducks and realized that I had no ducks in this quilt.
I did have geese in the quilt though...
...so to cut a long story short, I decided I would make a duck block that could replace the geese. Actually, in my workshop, I help others add their own original blocks for favorite pets or animals. Some add dogs or pet birds which are also a lot of fun to create.
Now back to my ducks.... I created this new block and added some ducklings in the mix. As in the original quilt, I blanket stitched around the applique and used free-motion to embroider the detail.
The finished block ends up 7" like the quilt's goose block however it also fits nicely in either 6" or 8" blocks..... or if you wanted to add more ducklings, it could be extended to make a rectangular block....
When working on the ducklings, you'll notice some of the pieces are pretty small. Tweezers can be helpful or if you just don't want to deal with them, they can easily be omitted.
For the duck wing, I wanted to use the same fabric but knew it wouldn't show up well so being a directional fabric I created the difference by changing the grain/direction of the fabric.
Of course, I've added these tips in my pattern as well as the Blanket Stitch instructions.
I hope you like this substitute block, I certainly had fun making it!
